What to know
A file cuts in one direction. Dragging it back across the work on the return stroke dulls the teeth and does nothing useful. Hand-stitched rasps have deliberately irregular teeth so they leave no tracking lines; machine-cut rasps are cheaper and faster but leave a regular scratch pattern you then have to remove. Chalking a file slows loading on soft metals.
