What to know
Bench chisels arrive ground but not sharpened, and the back matters more than the bevel. Flattening the first 20 mm of the back on a coarse stone is the setup step people skip, and it is the reason a new chisel can feel worse than an old one. Chrome-manganese takes an edge fast and loses it fast; high-carbon holds longer but rusts if you look at it wrong.
