A float is not a rasp. Instead of individual raised teeth it has continuous rows of very fine shearing edges, so it cuts wood the way a plane iron does rather than scraping it.

On end grain and dense hardwood it leaves a surface that needs almost no sanding — which is the point, because sanding end grain evenly is difficult.

For wood only. Metal will destroy the edges.
